Big gifts can come in small packages

Yeah, that’s a cliché, but in this instance, it is true.

Several news outlets have reported that there appears to be a plan that will provide a new site for the 11 tiny homes known as the Beloved Community Village, which houses formerly homeless residents. (The photo was on the Village’s Facebook page, and picked up by Westword.)

The twists and turns of the tiny home project have been baffling to me, since the Village could only be on a site for six months, and then the project lost a new site when the city of Denver at the last minute said that the land in the TAXI development was in a flood plain.

But now, the city is offering some land in Globeville to the group with a one-year lease — with an eye to renew for three years after. If this works, the Village is looking to add amenities such as a community center housing restrooms and other services, according to a representative of the Colorado Village Collaborative.

The lease agreement is on the agenda for discussion by members of the City Council’s finance and governance committee, at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 5.

Below are links to the stories on this step forward, and a link to the City Council’s committee meeting agenda for the weeks of February 4 and 11. On Monday, February 4, the housing and homelessness working group meets at 2:30 p.m. to hear a presentation on research into how other cities have approached “temporary housing, encampments, etc., for unsheltered homeless individuals.”
